Meetal is the Maiden name of Israeli born Julie M. Berman. Its meaning "arising from the morning dew" is an appropriate name for a child of Survivors. Arising out of the ashes of the camps and the ghettos into a new and promising tomorrow. This series of paintings have been a calling that Meetal has always felt she had. Telling her parent's stories had been a burden on her conscious for many years. For years she struggled to find someone who would write their stories in book form. She realized that it would be up to her to get this done. As an artist she also realized that her form of education and documentation would be on canvas. With that in mind she set out to paint three paintings, one for her mother, one for her father and one to show the out come of their struggles. Two years later she emerged with ten paintings. Some of the paintings were not at all planned " I often felt as though I was just a tool in producing these paintings. There were other forces in control of my paint brush. It has been an incredible experience, one that has been very gratifying and comforting. It's as though I have fulfilled a mission."
"This collection of 10 paintings was created to educate not to profit. There is so much that we do not yet know of the horrors of the holocaust, there is so much heroism that we will never watch in a movie. With the recent passing of my father I realize how precious each survivor is because there is such little time to hear their stories. We have already lost so much from those who never survived and those who never spoke of those times. I feel that as time marches on it will be my generation, the second generation, who will have to educate and keep the flame burning so that it never happens again. If a person who views these paintings walks away with tears in their eyes or a chill runs down their spine then I know that I was successful with what I created. I am asked every day if I am done with the series. I think I will never be done as long as there are people denying the holocaust, as long as there is a story yet untold, I will not be done. I may work on other projects but I'll never be through with the Holocaust."
